Seoul Subway for Tourists: Fares, Apps

Seoul subway card Seoul subway map tip

The fastest way to move around the capital is the Seoul subway: tap a transit card, ride distance-based fares, and transfer to city buses without buying a new ticket each time. Adult card base fare is ₩1,550 for trips up to 10 km (effective 28 Jun 2025; still published on official pages as of 9 Sep 2026).

I matched Seoul Metro fares, Seoul.go.kr transfer and Climate Card pages, VISITKOREA card notes (Aug 2026), Metro9 express FAQ, and AREX reservation fares. Re-check won figures on travel day.

📌 One line to remember

T-money for flexible rides · Climate short-term for dense Seoul days · tap in and out keeps most hops simple. Pair Naver Map with Kakao Metro on the rails.

1. ✅ One-line plan for riders

1-1. 📌 Card first, then apps

Buy or charge a transit card before your first gate — not a raw foreign credit tap. Then open Naver Map for the trip and Kakao Metro for live trains on the Seoul subway.

Short central hops often stay near the adult base; longer legs add distance. Confirm in an app. Check date: 2026-09-09 (Asia/Seoul).

2. 💳 T-money vs Climate Card short-term

2-1. 🛒 T-money — flexible nationwide prepaid

T-money is the default reloadable prepaid card for the Seoul subway, city buses, many taxis, and affiliates. Buy and load at convenience stores (GS25, CU, 7-Eleven) and Lines 1–8 information centers. VISITKOREA lists plastic around ₩3,000–5,000; ride balance is separate.

2-2. 🌱 Climate Card short-term — unlimited Seoul density

Climate Card short-term gives unlimited rides on covered metro and Seoul-licensed city/town buses. Prices: 1d ₩5,000 · 2d ₩8,000 · 3d ₩10,000 · 5d ₩15,000 · 7d ₩20,000, plus about ₩3,000 for a first physical card. Validity starts on the charge date — no advance start.

From 2025-03-20, short-term Climate passes accept international cards at designated new machines on Lines 1–8 — not every station.

2-3. ⚠️ Climate range limits

Climate excludes Sinbundang, GTX, and many non-Seoul sections. AREX coverage is Seoul-side only; boarding at ICN T1/T2 is restricted. Exit outside range and staff may collect the distance gap. After the 2026 transition, tourists use short-term packs, not the old 30-day product.

3. 💰 Adult fares and distance add-ons

3-1. 📍 Base fare numbers

Adult transit-card base on the Seoul subway is ₩1,550 ≤10 km (teen ₩900 · child ₩550). Adult single-journey is ₩1,650. Distance: +₩100 / 5 km (10–50 km), then +₩100 / 8 km beyond 50 km. Early bird before 06:30: 20% off first card ride → ₩1,240.

3-2. 🧮 How to estimate your hop

Central pairs like Hongdae–Gangnam often fit ≤10 km — confirm in Naver Map. Single-journey machines often take a ₩500 refundable deposit (not a fare). Prefer a stored card for multiple rides.

4. 🔄 Transfer window subway ↔ bus

4-1. ⏱️ The clock that matters

Transfer within 30 minutes after tap-out (60 minutes from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m.). Up to four transfers (five boardings). Tap in and out every segment. Same vehicle or same bus route is not a transfer.

4-2. 💡 What “free transfer” really means

Within ~10 km combined, you usually avoid a second full base when switching between the Seoul subway and bus. Beyond that, +₩100 / 5 km can apply. Highest mode base wins. Rule: 30 min (60 late night), tap in/out, ≤4 transfers.

5. 🚄 Line 9 express vs local

5-1. 🔴 Check the screen before you board

Line 9 runs local (일반) and express (급행); express skips many stations. Metro9 FAQ marks express red and normal green — read the platform screen. Most other lines feel all-stop. AREX Express is a separate reserved product.

6. 📱 Two apps: Naver Map and Kakao Metro

6-1. 🗺️ Naver Map — door-to-door planner

Naver Map is the primary door-to-door tool for the Seoul subway plus buses and walking — exits, transfer walking, live arrivals. Start unfamiliar trips here; cache offline tiles on Wi-Fi.

6-2. 🚇 Kakao Metro — rail specialist

Kakao Metro focuses on line maps, live trains, and transfer car guidance once you are on the rails. Essential pair = these two; other apps are optional backups.

Kakao MetroLine map, live trains, car guidanceOn the platform or during transfers

7. ✈️ AREX airport link (brief)

7-1. 🎫 All-stop vs Express

AREX All-stop is distance-based with T-money and useful mid stops (Hongdae, Gimpo). Adult card Seoul Station ↔ ICN is commonly about ₩4,750 T1 / ₩5,350 T2 post–28 Jun 2025 — approximate; re-check on travel day.

AREX Express is reserved nonstop: adult non-member ₩13,000 (member ₩12,500; child/discount ₩9,500) — not a T-money tap. About 43 min to T1 / 51 min to T2. Pick All-stop for mid stops; Express for a reserved nonstop seat.
