Seoul Date Ideas at Night: Han River, Palaces and Seoullo

Good Seoul date ideas at night do not have to cost much. Two royal palaces, Deoksugung and Changgyeonggung, stay open until 21:00 and charge adults less than a subway fare; the Seoullo 7017 sky garden is free and open 24 hours; and until the end of October the Banpo Bridge fountain puts on free 20-minute shows over the Han River. Below are the official hours, prices and closing days for each, plus three ready-made evening plans with the total cost for two.

Quick answer

₩1,000 Adult ticket at Deoksugung and Changgyeonggung, both open until 21:00 (last entry 20:00) · closed Mondays

The cheapest romantic evening in Seoul is a palace that stays open late: Deoksugung and Changgyeonggung both open until 21:00 for a small gate fee, then walk to Seoullo 7017, which never closes.

Palaces that stay open until 21:00

Most visitors assume Seoul's royal palaces shut at dusk, and the best-known one does: Gyeongbokgung closes at 17:00 from November to February, 18:00 in spring and autumn and 18:30 in summer, according to VisitKorea. Two smaller palaces work differently. Deoksugung and Changgyeonggung both list opening hours of 09:00 to 21:00, with last entry at 20:00, which turns them into evening venues for most of the year.

The ticket is the other surprise. Visit Seoul lists Deoksugung at ₩1,000 for foreign adults aged 19 to 64, and VisitKorea gives Changgyeonggung the same ₩1,000 individual price, with ₩800 per person for groups of ten or more. For two people, an evening inside a royal palace costs ₩2,000, less than a single cup of coffee in most Seoul cafรฉs.

Deoksugung is the easier one to reach: Visit Seoul puts it about 72 m from Exit 1 of City Hall Station on subway lines 1 and 2. Right outside runs the Deoksugung Stonewall Walkway, a pedestrian road along the palace wall that is at its best around sunset, when the street lamps come on. Changgyeonggung sits farther east at 185 Changgyeonggung-ro in Jongno-gu, next to the Changdeokgung area, and feels quieter after dark.

Mondays close both late palaces

Deoksugung and Changgyeonggung are closed on Mondays; if a Monday is a public holiday, Changgyeonggung's VisitKorea listing says it closes on the next business day instead. Gyeongbokgung closes on Tuesdays. Plan a palace date for Tuesday to Sunday.

Jeongdong, the old diplomatic quarter around Deoksugung, also hosts the Jeongdong Culture Night festival. Visit Seoul lists the 2026 edition for October 30 and 31, with night openings of historic buildings along Jeongdong-gil. If your trip lands on those dates, a Deoksugung visit and the festival fit into the same walk.

Banpo Bridge fountain: free shows until the end of October

The Moonlight Rainbow Fountain on Banpo Bridge is the Han River's best-known night show. The Hangang Park office says water is sprayed along a 1,140 m stretch on both sides of the bridge, set to music and lit at night, and that Guinness registered it on 7 November 2008 as the world's longest bridge fountain. Watching from Banpo Hangang Park is free.

SeasonMonthsShow times (20 minutes each)

PeakJune to Septemberthe same five, plus 21:30
No showsNovember to March 14fountain switched off

The fountain season, per the same official page, runs from March 15 to October, so a visit in late October catches the last shows of the year, and from November until mid-March there is nothing to see. The page was last updated on 14 September 2026 and notes that times can change for events or test runs under the 2026 Hangang fountain operating plan.

Weather matters as much as the calendar. Shows are cancelled when wind reaches 7 m/s or more, when rain is forecast during show time, or when the river's turbidity reaches 15 NTU. On a breezy evening, check before you cross the city; the fountain operations room is listed at 02-3780-0578.

Tip · Picking a show The earliest evening show is at 19:30 and the last regular one at 21:00, so a single trip can cover two or three shows if you arrive early with a mat or a takeaway dinner. In June to September an extra 21:30 show is added, which gives late diners one more chance to catch it.

Seoullo 7017: a sky garden that never closes

Seoullo 7017 is an old car overpass beside Seoul Station that the city turned into an elevated linear park. The Seoul Metropolitan Government says it is open to the public 24 hours a day, all year round, and counts 24,085 trees of 228 species planted in 645 round planters. Entry is free, which makes it the most flexible stop on any night itinerary.

At night the round planters are lit from within, and the walkway looks down on the lights of Seoul Station and the older neighborhoods of Malli-dong and Jungnim-dong. It is a good place to walk after dinner rather than a destination in itself: think of it as a quiet bridge between a palace visit and the rest of the evening.

Stone wall walkway beside a Seoul palace at dusk

Seoullo's cafรฉs and small stages keep their own shorter hours, so do not count on buying food on the walkway late at night. The park also has a children's play space and performance stages, which can be busy on weekend afternoons but are usually calm after 21:00.

Because Deoksugung, Seoul Station and Seoullo sit close together in the city center, many couples link them on foot. Leave the palace by 21:00, walk south through the city center, climb onto Seoullo and finish at Seoul Station, where subway lines 1 and 4 and the airport railroad meet.

Tip · Pairing Seoullo with dinner Seoul Station and the streets around it have plenty of places to eat, so Seoullo works well as the walk after dinner. Start on the walkway near the station, stroll its length and come back down for the subway home.

N Seoul Tower: the classic view, and what it costs

If you want the postcard view of Seoul's lights, the observatory at N Seoul Tower on Namsan is open later than any palace. VisitKorea lists the tower as open every day of the year, from 10:00 to 22:30 on weekdays and 10:00 to 23:00 on Saturdays and Sundays.

It is also the most expensive stop in this guide. Observatory tickets cost ₩29,000 for anyone aged 13 or older and ₩23,000 for children aged 3 to 12 and seniors 65 and over. For two adults that is ₩58,000, the same as 29 couples' palace tickets, so it is worth deciding in advance whether the indoor view is the main event or whether the free plaza at the tower's base is enough.

The tower's famous padlocks are sold as wish locks. VisitKorea says they can be bought at the souvenir shop near the cable car station at the top of the mountain, where pens are provided for writing names. The Namsan Cable Car runs from the foot of the mountain to the base of the tower, and shuttle buses link it with downtown Seoul.

Tip · Free alternative on Namsan The plaza and lock fences around the base of the tower do not require an observatory ticket. On a clear night the view from the plaza already covers much of the city; the paid observatory adds height and a full 360-degree circuit indoors.

Three evening plans and what they cost for two

The spots above combine into a few natural routes. The costs below cover entry tickets for two adults only and leave out dinner, drinks and transport, because those vary far more than the tickets do. All prices are the official adult rates read on 23 October 2026.

The palace and sky garden plan is the cheapest at ₩2,000 for two, and it works on any day except Monday. The river plan swaps Deoksugung for Changgyeonggung and ends at the fountain, so it only works until the end of October; after that, replace the fountain with a walk along the riverbank at Banpo Hangang Park, which is lit even when the fountain is off.

The tower plan costs ₩58,000 for two with the observatory, or nothing beyond transport if you stay on the plaza. Because the tower is open until 22:30 or 23:00, it is also the fallback for a Monday night, when both late palaces are closed.

Closing times and closed days of Seoul night spots
Mondays close two palaces and Tuesdays close Gyeongbokgung

If you have two evenings, split the plans rather than squeezing them into one night. A palace evening is relaxed and close to restaurants in the city center, while the tower involves a cable car or a climb and takes longer than most people expect. Keeping them apart leaves time to linger, which is the point of a date in the first place.

Getting around and timing your night

All of these places are reachable by subway, and paying with a T-money card avoids buying single tickets at each station. Our T-money card guide covers buying, topping up and refunds, and the Seoul subway guide explains fares and the apps that show the last train.

  • Arrive at a late palace by 20:00, since that is the last entry time
  • Check the day: Monday closes Deoksugung and Changgyeonggung, Tuesday closes Gyeongbokgung
  • For the fountain, look at the wind and rain forecast before you set out
  • From November, bring a warm layer; riverside wind feels much colder after dark

Season changes the mood more than the hours. In late October the palace trees turn, and the fountain still runs; from November to February Gyeongbokgung closes at 17:00, but the two late palaces keep their 21:00 closing. For what to wear in each month, see the Korea weather by month guide.

Finally, keep an eye on holiday weeks. Each palace moves its closed day when that day is a public holiday, and big festivals can change fountain times. Hours and prices in this guide come from official pages read on 23 October 2026, and they are the ones most likely to change.

FAQ

What can we do by the river once the fountain season ends?
From November the bridges and riverside paths are still part of the night skyline, so a riverside stroll with takeaway food remains a low-cost option. Dress for wind, because open water makes a cold night feel colder.
Can we go inside Gyeongbokgung in the evening?
Not on an ordinary day. Its closing time moves with the seasons, from late afternoon in winter to early evening in summer, so by dinner time the gates are shut. Pick one of the two late palaces for a visit after dark.
Do we need to book palace tickets in advance?
Regular admission at Deoksugung and Changgyeonggung is sold at the gate, and no booking is needed for an ordinary visit. Special night programs at other palaces are run separately, with their own dates and tickets announced by the palace offices.
Which of these spots is open on a Monday night?
Deoksugung and Changgyeonggung are closed on Mondays, but Seoullo 7017 is open around the clock and N Seoul Tower is open every day of the year. A Monday date can pair the sky garden with the tower, or with the Banpo fountain until the end of October.

In three lines

  1. Deoksugung and Changgyeonggung are open until 21:00 for ₩1,000 per adult, closed Mondays
  2. The Banpo fountain is free with shows at 19:30 to 21:00, but only from March 15 to the end of October
  3. Seoullo 7017 is free and open 24 hours; N Seoul Tower's observatory costs ₩29,000 and stays open until 22:30 or 23:00
